Awards and Recognition

• JLA’s public involvement effort on the Aloha-Reedville Study and Livable Community Plan was awarded the 2014 PI Best Practice Award for Best Planning Project by the International Association for Public Participation (IAP2). The Aloha-Reedville Study and Livable Community Plan was a three-year effort to engage the entire Aloha-Reedville community to improve the quality of life and address the impact of future growth. From the beginning of the project, public feedback provided the backbone for what resulted as the final project study. Public involvement was essential in meeting the project objectives and in reaching a final result that was broadly supported by the community.

  The PI Best Practice Awards recognize projects in Oregon and Washington that promote meaningful and innovative opportunities for community engagement. The IAP2 Core Values provide the basis for evaluating award nominations. 

• The Sellwood Bridge project received a Grand Award at the 2011 American Council of Engineering Companies of Oregon's Engineering Excellence Awards. The Sellwood Bridge "Build A Bridge" web tool was also recognized in 2008 by the Transportation Research Board (TRB) as a best innovative outreach approach to dealing with a technical transportation issue. CH2M HILL and JLA recieved the awards.

• The League of Oregon Cities honored the Lake Oswego Interceptor Sewer (LOIS) communications program with the 2009 Good Governance Award. The, project, proclaimed as "a blueprint for local governments," earned the award for its public outreach and education efforts involved with the wastewater interceptor replacement project. In less than one year, JLA helped the LOIS Communications Team host over 60 public outreach meetings with neighborhood and business groups, institute a telephone hotline, launch a comprehensive website, produce the first of five documentary webisodes, set up informational displays at City events, establish a new media presence on Facebook and Twitter, deliver 48 electronic newsletters, and coordinate door-to-door neighborhood advisories.

• JLA's public involvement efforts with the City of Damascus earned the 2007 Award of Excellence for Community Visioning through the City-County Communications and Marketing Association (3CMA). This award recognizes outstanding local government achievements and innovations in the areas of communication, public outreach, citizen-government relationships and public-sector marketing. JLA's creative and innovative public involvement strategies were recognized out more than 700 entries nationwide.

• Boeckman Road-Tooze Road Connector EA - JLA designed and implemented a NEPA-compliant public involvement program for the extension of a major arterial road in the City of Wilsonville. The project had to balance environmental challenges with feasible, buildable and fundable design alternatives. The final design includes several wildlife crossings to facilitate movement to green spaces, as well as a multi-use bike/pedestrian path to connect to regional trails. This project won the 2007 Project of the Year Award by the Portland chapter of Women's Transportation Seminar (WTS).

• JLA provided local and statewide construction outreach during a five-month repair of the Cape Creek Tunnel near Yachats on the Oregon Coast. The construction approach required closing one lane of U.S. 101 to traffic during the weekdays and completely closing it to traffic in the evenings. A previous landslide near this location impacted the economies of Florence and Yachats and the communities were nervous about ODOT's plans. JLA helped determine public preferences for construction approach and then managed construction outreach, including a project hotline, media outreach, project information (including extensive statewide travel outreach) and a ribbon-cutting ceremony to re-open the tunnel. The result was positive community relations for ODOT for what could have been an extremely difficult project. This project won an Honor Award at the 2006 American Council of Engineering Companies of Oregon's Engineering Excellence Awards.
